The work there is usually restoration: relaying a tired path, rebuilding a wall, opening up a garden that has closed in. Towards Matford and the newer estates it is the opposite: blank plots, compacted ground and no structure at all. Those want a scheme, not a patch, and they are a good candidate for a full design-and-build in one go. ## Trees, roots and what you can build near them Mature gardens near the Alphin Brook often have significant trees, and paving laid over roots without thought lifts within a few years. Where roots are in the way we adjust the build rather than cut through what is holding the tree up. It occasionally means a different surface, a slightly different position or a raised detail.
